Using Role Models for Golf Swing Improvement

Using role models for golf swing improvement improves your swing much faster.

Golf swing improvement can be enhanced by using role models.

They are everywhere - coming soon to a TV set near you. Not to mention all the training DVDs available. We are spoilt for choice from a myriad number of excellent teachers, masters and champions.

But if learning from them was so easy, how come we aren't all as good as they are?

One of the ways to enhance your learning from these role models, for your golf swing improvement, is to refine the skill with which you model them.

There are some key principles you should know to get the most out of their demonstrations and instructions.

If you get this one right you can literally take years off your development as a golfer. Their blood sweat and tears becomes your easier road to mastering this game.

Here are some of these techniques and principles. They hold true, by the way, for all aspects of life where you can find good mentors and role models.

Choose your Role Models Carefully

For a physical game like golf you might want to choose a role model who has a similar physical stature as yourself for ease of golf swing improvement. If you are short and stocky there might be something about the swing that suits you that doesn't suit someone who is tall and rangy. It might be harder to translate the action to yourself. This isn't a critical point but one worth considering just the same.

If I had to choose between someone with a better swing but a different physical build than me I would still use the better swing version.

It is sometimes better to go for a composite role model. That is the swing of this champion, the temperament of that one, the fierce competitiveness of another, a different champions putting style ....

Remember, once we are dealing with imagery inside your own head we aren't dealing with reality anymore. We can do what we want. At some point though, you are going to have to come up with a version that you can consistently use to groove in your new good habits. Your golf swing improvement can continue relentlessly.

The beauty of golf is that it is a stop / start game. You get to prepare yourself for each shot, it isn't a game that is dynamic and instant such as hockey for example, or boxing.

With this in mind, carefully construct your role models for each distinct part of your game: one for driving, another for putting, long putts, short putts, fast greens, sloping greens, bunker shots and so on.

You probably aren't going to have just one person for all those scenarios and more. For golf swing improvement each one you choose is going to take its own work to build into your references. That's OK though, I mean you do practice those shots don't you?

With a good role model set up and good sensory coding (right size of picture, location, brightness etc) you can do a lot of this practice virtually, in your mind, away from the golf course. Daily improvement with out the green fees!!

Adjust your Visual Reference for your Role Models

There are two ways of visualising with Role Models it seems (different to Associated and Disassociated from the previous page). You need to combine the visualising you do with YOUR shots with the external visual references you have for your role models.

Many times this is going to be from a TV screen. Now, I am betting that you haven't often seen yourself on TV playing the 18th at Augusta? (stay with this program and we might get you there - I am nominating in for your caddies position).

The reason why role models work is that it translates the action of the golf shot to your brain to your body. To do this most efficiently we need to synch in the references to make it easy. It would be great if you could video yourself playing a few strokes so we can use it here.

In short, we want you to be able to visualise yourself on a TV screen. This has added advantages as we can do close ups and slow down the shot. Easy for your brain to do as you would have strong references for doing this on your TV / DVD player.

Procedure for using Role Models

Before you begin, make sure you have your sensory coding for your best golf shots - feeling in the body, brightness of picture etc..

  1. Watch your role model go through the shot.
  2. Close your eyes and visualise that shot in your mind. Redo these two steps until you get a very good image in your mind that works.
  3. Then see yourself (disassociated) go through the same shot in EXACTLY the same way. A small point, but make sure you watch the ball all the way to its landing.
  4. Even see yourself with the same type clothes as your role model if that helps. We want the imagery of both to be the same.
  5. Now step inside the role model and go through the shot Associated through their eyes. Do this until it is easy. Perhaps go back and forth from Associated and Disassociated.
  6. When this is easy go from role model Associated to yourself Associated - obviously with extremely good shots.
  7. Note the feelings in the body and the type of imaging - size of picture, brightness etc.
  8. Once more get some strong visual references of both you and the role model performing the stroke - Associated and Disassociated.
  9. Finish with yourself doing the shot Associated as if on the course.

Note, that if your visual references for your role model are from a TV screen, start with the screen version and move to being on the golf course (yours) version.

Go through this everytime you hit the ball on the golf course. You have time. This can all happen fairly quickly once you get used to it.

There are other strategies that go with golf swing improvement such as having a good Dumping Technique. I will cover them later.

Also, keep in mind, a legitimate role model is yourself with your super best shot moments. We all have them from time to time. Self generated golf swing improvement.

Having a symbol or icon to go with this makes it natural and instinctive for you. I have built that into the Mastering Golf using NLP and Feldenkrais system elsewhere on this site.

Imagine, one day someone may well be doing this with YOU as a reference from your DVD Golf Training set including footage of YOU at the Masters.

Go Back to the two types of visualising.
